Five Tips for Safe Online Surfing

No matter how diligent we think we are, we’re all susceptible to getting too comfortable and letting our guard down from time to time. This is as true for safe internet surfing as it is for eating sushi in a landlocked state — it happens! Here are five tips to keep you safe while surfing at home or at work.

1. Only use a secure internet connection
If you’re browsing at work, this part is already done for you. But if you’re at home or on a public wifi, you’ll need to take extra precautions to make sure your connection is secure. At home, set up a strong password for your router. Also be sure to hide your network and keep you’re your router firmware up to date. Getting some work done at a coffee shop? This is not the best time to pay bills or shop online, as you can’t verify the security of this internet connection and may be exposing yourself to cybercriminals.

2. Choose strong passwords and update them
A long and complicated password is no good if it’s been your default password for 10 years. Make sure to create strong passwords, but also remember to update them frequently.

3. Keep your system antivirus software current
It’s very tempting to hit “remind me later” with every alert, but this habit could come back to bite you. Make sure to keep your antivirus software up to date. After all, it was employee negligence like this that led to multiple cyberattacks across government and public sectors so far in 2019. Don’t open the door for someone to hold your files ransom!

4. Don’t overshare
Avoid putting any private information online that could lead to an attack or breach. This includes your full legal name, address and date of birth, and of course, credit card and social security numbers.

5. Be alert
Hackers and cybercriminals are always evolving to come up with new ways around firewalls. Always be aware of something that seems out of the ordinary or too good to be true.
